WASTE MANAGEMENT
FOR ISLANDS.
Islands and coasts in a developing country like the Philippines need extra help when it comes to waste management
MITIGATING FACTOR 1
Islands are inaccessible
Most Philippine islands are only accessible by boats, or don’t even have circumferential roads. Traditional waste management solutions like dump trucks and big plastic waste bins just don’t work in the coastal context. With limited land, there isn’t space for waste processing plants, municipality-wide MRFs or compost pits either.
MITIGATING FACTOR 2
Waves of plastic dumped by winds & currents
In our experience, the coastal communities don’t produce a lot of plastic waste. They are not big consumers! But everyday, throughout the day, winds and currents dump plastic waste onto their shores. Without waste management just for their own waste, communities are overwhelmed by this waste coming from wealthier shores.
Pure Oceans focuses on helping islands & coastal communities, especially along the Verde Island Passage, because of these special circumstances. The communities need ways to find a life with dignity despite the plastic waste problem. As we have worked with them, we prototype and continue to evolve ways to address marine plastic litter together.
WE DO THIS BY.
COMMUNITY ENTERPRISES
Help develop community enterprises in plastic waste
The plastic waste that crashes on the islands can be turned into extra income, especially for the communities that are below the poverty line. Together with the community, we create entrepreneurial solutions that give them extra means of livelihood, while also helping them manage their own waste + marine plastic litter.
WASTE MGT DESIGN THINKING WORKSHOPS
Upskill community leaders
Designing a waste management system blends knowledge of local culture, human behavior, experience design & waste management expertise.
Yet barangay officers don’t get capacitated to design and implement with the out of the box thinking required of their special case.
We take barangay solid waste management committees through a human centered design process tailored to them, while guiding them through to a solid waste management plan that’s appropriate for their coastal community.
CLOSEDLOOP COASTAL BUSINESSES
Close the plastic waste loop for coastal communities & businesses
Waste management is at first, experience design, and then a whole lot of logistics.
We got our start by designing a sustainable plastic waste management plan for Planet Dive resort, and have consulted with others after that.
We also continue supporting our communities in the hauling of their cleaned plastic waste to the environmentally appropriate endpoints.
